Get notifications
Today's appointment changes and your assignments, on your phone.
- Where
- Settings → Just you → Notifications
- Who
- The bishopric
- Time
- 3 min
1stHour can tell your phone when today's appointments change and when you're given an assignment. It can also email you each morning's schedule. Both are for the bishopric, which usually includes the executive secretary.
Notifications reach only the phone or computer you turn them on for. They never go to anyone outside the bishopric, and nothing in them names the person an appointment is with.
1. Who can get them
Only a Bishopric sign-in gets notifications and the morning schedule email. The ward clerk and the other roles get none, by design. Their Settings has no Notifications row, and Today offers them no notifications card.
Some wards don't have notifications yet. In those, the bishopric has no Notifications row either.
2. Turn them on for this phone
SettingsJust youNotifications
On an iPhone, add 1stHour to your Home Screen first and open it from there (see put 1stHour on your Home Screen). Then:
- Open Settings and choose Notifications. This phone's notifications are at the top; the email is below them.
- Tap Allow notifications.
- Tap Allow when your phone asks.
- Turn each one on or off. Each saves right away.
Today offers the same: tap Turn on notifications on the card, then Allow. Not now puts the card away on that phone. It comes back once, two weeks later.
Each phone, computer or browser keeps its own switches. Turn them on again on each one you use. Signing out on a phone turns its notifications off.
If you tapped Don't Allow, the page shows how to turn them back on in your phone's Settings. Then tap I've allowed them.
3. What each one tells you
They come in two groups, Appointments and Assignments. Under each name it says how many are on, such as 4 of 5 on. The switch beside the name turns the whole group on, or, when all of it is on, off.
Appointments are about today only, and start at 6:00 AM in your ward's time zone. Before then, the morning schedule already has the day's changes.
- Morning schedule
- Your day at 6:00 AM, as a notification. The executive secretary's is everyone's day. It starts off; turn it on if you want it.
- New booking
- Someone takes a time today.
- Cancelled
- A booking today is cancelled, or moves off today or to someone else. A guest declining Google's invitation doesn't count: the booking stays.
- Moved
- A booking changes time, or moves onto today.
- Handed to you
- One of today's appointments moves to you.
- The bishop's requests
- The executive secretary's alone: the bishop asks him to get someone a time.
You're never told about a change you made yourself. The executive secretary hears of changes to everyone's appointments, and each interviewer of their own. An appointment notification shows the time and the kind of appointment, never the person's name. Tap it to open the appointment.
Assignments are Assigned to you, Due soon (a week before one of yours is due, the day before, and the morning it is due, at 6:00 AM) and Nudges. They never say what the assignment is. Tapping one opens your Assignments list.
4. On an iPhone: the Home Screen
An iPhone sends notifications only to 1stHour on its Home Screen, opened from there.
- In Safari, tap the menu button at the left of the address bar (on some iPhones it is More, three dots, beside it).
- Tap Share, then View More, then Add to Home Screen.
- Keep Open as Web App on, and tap Add.
- Open 1stHour from the new icon on your Home Screen, not from Safari.
- Turn notifications on there (step 2).
Until you do, Today shows a card, Add 1stHour to your Home Screen. Tap Show me how for these steps. The Notifications page says the same while 1stHour isn't on the Home Screen.
5. The morning schedule email
On a day you have appointments, 1stHour emails you that day's schedule at 6:00 AM. Turn yours off or on under Email on the same Notifications page. See the morning schedule email for what it shows and how the bishop turns it off for the whole ward.
6. If one doesn't arrive
- Check the switch on this phone. Each device has its own. Open Settings → Notifications on the phone that should ring.
- On an iPhone, open 1stHour from the Home Screen icon. Notifications don't reach it in Safari.
- Check your phone's own settings. Focus, Do Not Disturb or a notification setting for 1stHour can hold them back. The Notifications page says when your phone blocks them.
- Appointments only ring for today, from 6:00 AM. A booking for next week doesn't ring.
- You made the change. You're never told of your own.
- Signed out? Signing out turns that phone's notifications off. Turn them on again after you sign back in.
