Read announcements aloud
Announcements read from the pulpit.
- Where
- Bulletin and the Sunday
An announcement can be printed, read aloud from the pulpit, or both. You decide which. Every announcement lives in the Bulletin; to write one, see the bulletin.
Each Sunday then goes like this:
- Choose which announcements are read that Sunday.
- Word the sentence the conductor says before them, if you want one.
- Check where they fall in the conducting script.
1. Printed, spoken or both
Open the announcement in Bulletin (or add a new one), tap Format and choose:
- Printed (the default)
- On the ward's public Announcements page and the printed program. It's read aloud only on a Sunday you tick it. Printed standing info isn't read aloud or offered to tick, unless you choose to read it (below).
- Spoken
- Read from the pulpit every Sunday it runs. Never printed and never on the ward's page.
- Both
- Printed, and read from the pulpit every Sunday it runs.
A line under the choice says what it does.
Standing info at the pulpit. Standing info is printed and not read aloud, so its At the pulpit row says Not read aloud. To read it at the pulpit too, tap At the pulpit, then Read it at the pulpit too. That sets its Format to Both: it stays printed, and it's read every Sunday it shows, with a tick to skip it like any other. You can then give it its own words, below.
Only the bishopric and the ward clerk see Format. An announcement an organization leader adds is printed, unless the bishopric or clerk changes it. For how long an announcement runs, see how long it shows.
2. Choose what is read this Sunday
Open the Sunday and tap the Announcements row in the program ("2 to read", say). The block lists every announcement running that Sunday, each with a tick. A tick means "read this one aloud this Sunday":
- Spoken and Both start ticked. Untick one to skip it this Sunday only.
- Printed ones start unticked. Tick one to read it this Sunday too.
A tick saves right away. It changes that one Sunday and nothing else. The announcement itself, the bulletin and the printed program stay exactly as they were.
A tick is a plan for the meeting, not a record afterwards. 1stHour doesn't ask whether an announcement was actually read. If one was skipped on the day, nothing needs changing.
To add one that isn't there yet, tap Add an announcement in the block, fill it in, and tap Add to program. It joins the bulletin, and it starts ticked, so it's read this Sunday.
Details on each line opens the announcement, and Open the Bulletin takes you to the full list. The same ticks show in the Sunday's Announcements panel, which says how many are read aloud. Under each ticked one, the panel shows the words as the conductor will read them.
3. Word the sentence before them
The lead-in is the sentence the conductor says before the list, such as "We have the following announcements."
In the block, type it under What you'll read first. Read aloud, above the line, shows it with each announcement read this Sunday, in the words it will be read. To add a name the Sunday already knows, such as who is conducting, tap + Add a blank. It's read only when there's something to read. Leave it blank to go straight to the announcements.
To set it once for every new Sunday, go to Settings → Sacrament meeting → Meeting templates, open the template and its Announcements block, and type it there.
4. Where it is read
Press Conduct on the Sunday. The announcements are read wherever the Announcements block sits in the program: the lead-in first, then each ticked announcement. Move the block to move them.
Heads up
No Announcements block, no announcements. If a Sunday's program doesn't have one, nothing is read aloud, and the Sunday's panel says so with Add the Announcements block. Check for the block before the meeting.
5. Word how each announcement is read
SettingsSacrament meetingConducting script
Only the bishopric can change this. The ward clerk can open the page and read every line, but can't change it. Under Each announcement read, the Announcement line says how the conductor reads every announcement. To start, tap Short, Standard or Full beside Start from, then change the words as you like.
The teal words in the line are blanks. Each one fills in from the announcement:
- Title, Details and Place;
- Date, such as "Saturday, Oct 31", and Time, such as "6:00 pm";
- When, the day and time together, which also says how a repeating event repeats;
- Contact, the name and phone or email under Contact.
To add one, put the cursor where it goes and tap + Add a blank, or type { to open the same list. The list says
what each blank reads for the sample announcement. Tap a blank in the line to see what it reads,
or tap Remove blank to take it out.
A part with a dotted line under it is skipped, words and all, when an announcement has nothing for it. To add one, tap + Add a blank, then A part to skip when empty…, type its words with the blank it depends on, and tap Add this part. Tap a dotted part to Change words, Always read it, or Remove it. In the line itself, a part is written in square brackets. For example, with Full:
Title[ is When][ at Place].[ Details][ Questions? Ask Contact.]
reads "Trunk-or-treat is Saturday, Oct 31 at 6:00 pm at Church parking lot. Bring a decorated car and treats. Questions? Ask Sis. Lena Hale." and, for an announcement with no time, place or contact, just "Ward choir is Thursday, Nov 5." Read aloud, above the line, shows it as you type. Tap ‹ or › there to try it on another sample announcement. Reset to the usual wording clears the line, and each announcement is read as before: its details and date, or its title alone.
One announcement in its own words. Open the announcement and tap At the pulpit. Read aloud shows the ward's line filled in from this announcement, and it changes as you edit the announcement. To say something different, tap Reword. The ward's line comes in as a start, and its blanks still fill in from the announcement, so a new date or time reads right on its own. These words are read instead of the ward's line. Tap Go back to the ward's usual line to undo them.
Only the bishopric and the clerk see At the pulpit, standing info included once it's read aloud, and only the bishopric can write these words. For the clerk the row shows the words as they are read, with no Reword. A bulletin editor or an organization never sees them. They are never printed or shown on the ward's page.
6. Reword one for this Sunday
Open the Sunday. In its Announcements panel, or in its Announcements block, each ticked announcement shows the words the conductor will read. Tap Reword under one, change the words, then tap:
- Save for this Sunday to read them on this Sunday only. The announcement is tagged Reworded for this Sunday's date, and Undo puts it back.
- Save to the announcement to read them every Sunday the announcement is read. It is then tagged Its own words, the same as rewording it in the Bulletin.
Cancel saves nothing. Only the bishopric can reword here; the clerk sees the words and tags.
