The bulletin
Announcements that print, and come down when they're over.
- Where
- Bulletin
In 1stHour, Bulletin is where announcements live. You write each one once, then choose three things:
- who it's for (the ward, or an organization such as Primary);
- how long it shows;
- whether it's printed, read aloud, or both (the bishopric and the clerk choose this).
It appears on the ward's public Announcements page, and on the printed program when it's this week's or the ward's (see what prints). If it has an event date, it also shows on that day in the calendar there. After its last day it stops showing on its own. Reading announcements aloud has its own guide: announcements read from the pulpit.
1. Add an announcement
- Open Bulletin and tap Add an announcement. On a phone it sits at the bottom of the screen; on a computer, beside the title. A New bulletin item sheet opens.
- Type a Title. It's the only thing you need: Add to program stays grey until there is one.
- Add Details if it needs them: a sentence or two. Anything longer belongs in a flier. A web
address or an email address typed here becomes a link members can tap. To show words instead
of the address, tap Add link under the details. In the Add a link sheet, type the
Words to show and the Web address, and tap Add link. Words you selected first are
already filled in. It writes
[Sign up](https://example.org/camp)for you, which shows Sign up. You can also type it that way. The printed program prints the words with the address after them. - Add any other fields it needs (see the list below).
- Check the rows under the fields: Format, At the pulpit, For and Shows. Most people see only For and Shows.
- To check how it will look, tap Preview, just above the add button.
- Tap Add to program.
It's now on the Bulletin list, and it shows on the program for the dates you chose. Adding an announcement sends nothing to anyone. Members see it when they open the ward's link.
Optional fields. Everything else waits until you ask for it. Tap a + chip to add that field, and the × on the field takes it away again:
- + Date and time
- If it's an event. Put the date here rather than in the details, so it shows on its day on Announcements, with an Add to calendar link. + Ends later or on another day covers an event that runs longer.
- + Location
- Where it is. Tap the box to see your ward's saved places, or start typing a name or address to narrow the list. Tap a place to fill in its name and address. Any other place can simply be typed. A bishopric member or the clerk also sees + Save "…" as a place under what they typed: tap it, add the address, and tap Save place to keep it for next time. Saved places are listed in Settings → Your ward → Ward details.
- + Contact
- Adds a Contact for more info card: a name and a phone or email. It adds a "For more info, contact …" line, and the card shows you the line as it will read.
- + Flyer or picture
- Where a flier goes. Upload it as a photo, several photos, or a PDF, pick a painting from the library, or use a picture from another website. It shows beside the announcement on the ward's Announcements page, where a tap opens it full size. The printed program stays text-only.
A picture from another website. Tap Choose a flyer or picture. Copy the address of the picture itself (press and hold it, or right-click it, and copy the image address). Paste it under Paste an image link, and tap Use this image once the preview shows. The address has to start with https://. If it leads to a web page instead of a picture, 1stHour says so and won't use it. A linked picture is one page: it can't start a flier of several pages. On the public page, the save button on the full-size view opens it in a new tab instead of saving it.
A picture you copied. A screenshot, or a picture copied from an email or a web page, can go straight in. Tap Paste a picture, shown when your browser lets 1stHour read the clipboard. On a computer you can also tap the choose button and press Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac). A pasted picture replaces what was there, the same as an upload.
A PDF flier. Tap the same button, then Upload a photo or PDF, and pick the PDF. Your phone turns each page into a picture as it uploads, and says which page it's preparing. Announcements shows the first page beside the announcement. A tap opens the whole flier, every page in order, to scroll through.
A flier can have up to 6 pages. If the PDF has more, the first 6 are kept and it tells you. A PDF with a password, or one that won't open, says "We couldn't read this PDF" and nothing is added. Each page is saved as a photo, so it counts toward your ward's space for photos.
A flier of several photos. Under Upload a photo or PDF, pick more than one photo at once. Each photo becomes a page, in the order you picked them, and shows the same way a PDF's pages do. Pick a PDF by itself: a PDF picked together with photos isn't added. If one photo doesn't upload, the others are still added and it tells you which one, so you can add it again with + Add a page.
Once a flier is uploaded, its pages are listed. Tap ↑ or ↓ to move a page earlier or later, and × to take one out. Page 1 is the picture beside the announcement, so move the one you want there to the top. Taking out page 1 makes page 2 the new first page. Tap + Add a page to add more photos after the last page, to a photo flier or a PDF one, up to 6 pages in all. Photos past the sixth page are left off, and it tells you. Picking a new PDF or photo starts the flier over.
Repeating events. Under Repeats, pick Every week (choir practice every Sunday) or Every month (the "second Tuesday" kind of thing). Add an Until date if it stops. A repeating event is one day long each time, so it can have an end time but not a later end day.
The rows. Tap one to change it:
- Format
- Printed, Spoken or Both. Only the bishopric and the clerk see this row.
- At the pulpit
- The words read aloud for it: the ward's usual line, or its own words. Only the bishopric and the clerk see this row. See how each announcement is read.
- For
- Who it's for. See organizations.
- Shows
- How long it stays on the program. See how long it shows.
Featured. Only the bishopric sees this switch, at the bottom of the form. Use it for the events the whole ward should see coming, like a ward Christmas party. Turn it on and the announcement is on a card headed Featured at the top of the ward's Announcements, and still shows on its own day further down. It also leads This week on the ward's home. On a Saturday once Sunday is published, and on Sunday morning, the meeting takes the top of the home, and featured announcements are on their own card under it. A Featured card shows the next three. It stays featured until its date passes. One with no date stays featured for as long as it shows. On an announcement already added, the switch saves on the tap.
What Preview shows. The item as it will look On the ward's page, with what you've typed so far. If it has a flier, tap the flier to open it full size. Above it is how long it shows. If it's Spoken or Both, the words spoken at the pulpit show too (only the bishopric and the clerk see these). A Spoken item is only heard, never on the ward's page, and the preview tells you so. Tap Back to editing to return to the form. Nothing is added until you tap the add button.
If you change your mind before adding it, tap Cancel. Nothing is added. If you've typed anything, it asks Discard this item? first: Keep editing takes you back with everything as you left it, and Discard throws it away.
From a Sunday. On a Sunday's screen, the Add chip under Announcements opens the same sheet.
To change one later, tap it on the Bulletin list. The same form opens, with no save button: each change saves as you go (it says Saving…, then Saved). Preview, at the end of the form, shows how it will look. ‹ Bulletin takes you back to the list.
Heads up
Removing an announcement can't be undone. Remove this announcement, at the bottom of the form, asks first. Keep it leaves it as it is. Remove it takes it off the program and the calendar, and deletes its flier or picture with it.
2. How long it shows
Tap Shows and pick when it starts and stops showing:
- Through the event
- Shows from now until the event's last day, then stops. This is chosen for you when it has an event date. A repeating event shows until its Until date, or keeps showing if it has none.
- This Sunday only
- Shows for just the coming Sunday (on a Sunday's screen, that Sunday). This is chosen for you when there's no event date.
- Choose dates
- Set From and Until yourself. For example, a youth conference notice can wait until it's a month out. Leave Until blank and it shows every week until you remove it.
- Always
- Standing info. See standing info.
If you remove the date from an item that runs through the event, it goes back to this Sunday only. Items you made before this form keep the dates they had.
When it's over. After its last day, an announcement stops showing on the program and the calendar. It stays on the Bulletin list, marked Ended, for three more days. Then it's deleted for good, flier and all. An announcement with no end (standing info, a repeating event with no Until, or Choose dates with no Until) is never deleted this way.
Each row on the list says where it stands: Running, Runs until a date, Starts a date, or Ended with the day it will be removed. The rest of what a row says is in read the Bulletin list.
3. Announcements and standing info
An announcement is this week's news: the ward social, a service project, a youth activity. It goes on the ward's Announcements page. The printed program prints this week's events and the ward's and stake's news, as many as fit, and points to the live program for the rest. See what prints.
Standing info is something that's always true: the building's address, the family history center hours, or how to reach the Relief Society president. To make one, set Shows to Always. It stays until you remove it, and shows:
- on the back of the printed program, under Ward info;
- on the ward's Announcements page, under Standing notices;
- on the Bulletin list, under Standing info.
Standing info counts as the ward's, so an org editor can add or change it only if Ward is one of their groups.
4. Organizations, and letting them post their own
For says who an announcement is for: Ward, Relief Society, Elders Quorum, Young Women, Young Men, Primary or Stake. Each announcement on the ward's Announcements page is marked with it, and members can choose which groups to show.
- It starts on Ward.
- Tap a group to add it, and tap it again to take it off. One always stays picked.
- Pick more than one when something belongs to two groups. On the ward's Announcements page, showing either group finds it.
- An announcement for both Young Women and Young Men, like a youth activity, is listed once under Young Women & Young Men, just before the two groups on their own. You'll see this on the Bulletin list, in Preview, in an org editor's Whole ward view of the bulletin, and on the ward's Announcements page when members show both groups.
- To move an item from Ward to Relief Society, tap Relief Society, then tap Ward.
You can change For on a saved item too, and on standing info, which still prints with the ward's info on the back.
Let an organization leader post their own
An Org editor is a leader who signs in to write their organization's announcements. To invite one:
SettingsYour wardWho can sign in
- Open their organization, such as Relief Society, and tap their position. If nobody holds it yet, pick them under Who holds it.
- Under Sign-in, tap Invite to sign in and enter their email. Their access shows as Org editor for their organization.
- If they post for other organizations too, tap Adjust access and tick them, then Done.
- Press Save and invite. 1stHour emails them an invitation. Sunday School and Temple and Family History have no section of their own, so an org editor who holds one posts under Ward, and can change only the announcements they added. The Ward mission leader role posts for Ward Mission the same way.
They sign in with that email and land on their organization's Assignments. Tabs along the bottom of the screen (the sidebar on a computer) take them to Callings and Bulletin. Their Bulletin opens on their own announcements. Add an announcement sits at the bottom of the screen on a phone, beside the title on a computer. Preview, just above the add button in the new announcement's sheet, shows it the way members will see it before they add it. Whole ward shows what the rest of the ward has on the coming Sunday's bulletin, the way members see it on the program. Tap an organization's name to fold its announcements away, and tap it again to open them. To check the real thing, tap See the program as members do under the date; the ward's program page opens in a new tab.
An org editor can:
- add and edit announcements for their groups;
- ask for one of theirs to be shared with the whole ward, and see the answer with a blue dot and a count on Bulletin (see below);
- read everyone else's announcements under Whole ward;
- where your ward has Callings, send the bishopric a request from it with Ask for a calling;
- work the jobs the bishopric gave their organization under Assignments.
An org editor can't:
- change another group's announcement, or move one onto a group that isn't theirs (Ward included: they ask instead);
- choose whether an announcement is read aloud;
- see speakers, ward business, the callings list or appointments.
A Bulletin editor is the same idea for the whole ward: they write any announcement, and see only the Bulletin. For every role, see who can see what.
6. Announce a baptism to the ward
A baptism can go on the ward's announcements, before or after the bishopric publishes its program. It's your choice: nothing is added until you tap the button. Whoever plans it can start it from the baptism itself: the ward mission leader, an org editor who holds Primary, the bishopric or the clerk.
- Open the baptism: from Programs (org editors and the ward mission leader), or from Upcoming (the bishopric and the clerk).
- Under Ward announcements, tap Add to the ward announcements. On a phone it's inside Baptism details.
- Check the form. It starts with "Baptism of" and the name, the day, the time and the place.
- Tap the button at the bottom of the form. What it says, and what happens, depends on who you are (below).
From an org editor who holds Primary, the button says Add it. The announcement shows under Primary right away, on the ward's Announcements page, like any Primary announcement. Ask to share with the whole ward is on in the form. Leave it on and the bishopric decides whether it also goes under Ward. It's the same ask as any other: you can turn it off, take it back, or ask again, and the answer brings the blue dot.
From the ward mission leader, the button says Ask to share it. Ward Mission has no list of its own on the ward's Announcements page, so the announcement waits for the bishopric and shows to nobody else until they share it. Then it shows under Ward. There's no switch to turn off. If it's declined, Ask again in the form asks again. To take it back, remove it with Remove this announcement.
From the bishopric or the clerk, the button says Add to program, and it goes under Ward straight away.
Before the program is published, the announcement has no link to it. The baptism says so: "The link to the program appears once the bishopric publishes it." When the bishopric publishes the program, Open the baptism program appears under the announcement by itself. You don't need to change the announcement.
To answer an ask (the bishopric, the clerk or the bulletin editor): it waits under Waiting on you marked as a baptism, with Open the baptism program to check it. If the program isn't published yet, it says Program not published yet instead, and the bishopric and the clerk get Open the baptism to see it. Answer it the same way as any other ask. Shared, a Primary baptism shows under Ward and still under Primary.
Each baptism goes on once. After that, the baptism says where its announcement stands, and Open it opens the announcement. If the bishopric declined the ward mission leader's and changes its mind, the bishopric, the clerk or the bulletin editor can open the announcement and tap Share it after all.
Note
If the bishopric unpublishes or removes the baptism, its announcement stays, but the link to the program comes off until the program is published again.
Nothing is emailed or sent to anyone.
7. Where your ward sees them, and what prints
- Announcements, the ward's public page for them, opened from the ward's home
- Any you featured on a card at the top, then this week, then month by month, with a month calendar and a filter by organization. Each one can be shared as a link that opens straight to it. An announcement with an event date is there from the day it starts showing, up to a year ahead. One without a date shows once that Sunday is published.
- The ward's home
- The This week card: any you featured first, then this week's events through the coming Sunday, soonest first, up to four rows. An announcement with no date is on it only when it's featured. A week with no events of its own shows Coming up instead: the featured ones and the next two events. On a Saturday or Sunday morning, when the meeting is on top, the featured ones are under it.
- The printed program
- Announcements inside, standing info on the back (below).
What prints. The printed program has room for a short list, so it picks:
- This week: every event in the coming week, whoever it's for, soonest first.
- Ward: the rest of what's for Ward or Stake, in the Bulletin list's order.
An announcement for one organization only, such as Relief Society, prints only in the week of its event. With no event that week, or no date at all, it stays on the ward's Announcements page. Under the list, every printed program says: "For every organization's announcements and the latest changes, scan the live program's code on the back."
When the list doesn't fit, it drops from the end: the ward's news goes first, then this week's latest events. On the back, standing info drops from the end before the QR codes do.
After that, changes show as soon as they're saved.
- Printed and Both announcements show on the Announcements page and the home as above, and print by the rule above.
- Spoken announcements are never printed or shown in any of them. They're only read aloud.
- Without an event date, an announcement isn't on the calendar.
8. Put announcements in order
- Find the announcement on the Bulletin list.
- Tap ↑ or ↓ on its row to move it one place.
The order is kept within its group (Ward, Relief Society, and so on). The ward's news prints in this order, and the ward's Announcements page lists each group in it. This week's events print by their date and time instead. Moving one sends nothing to anyone.
The arrows are on the bishopric's, the clerk's and the bulletin editor's Bulletin. An org editor's list has none: ask one of them to move yours.
9. Read the Bulletin list
Each organization's group has a heading with a count. Tap the heading to fold the group away, and tap it again to open it.
What a row can say, besides when it runs:
- Draft, not on the program yet
- Started for you but not on the program. It shows nowhere until you open it and change something: the first change puts it on.
- Waiting to be shared
- A ward mission leader's baptism announcement, waiting for the bishopric. It shows to nobody else yet. See announce a baptism.
- Spoken only, not printed
- Format is Spoken: it's read aloud and on no page.
- Printed and read aloud
- Format is Both.
- Ended · removed after today
- Its last day has passed. It's deleted for good after the day named. See how long it shows.
A row greyed out has ended. An org editor who opens another group's announcement from a link sees it read-only, with "This one belongs to a group you don't edit."
Note
An org editor's own list drops an announcement as soon as it ends. It isn't deleted yet: the bishopric, the clerk and the bulletin editor still see it, marked Ended, until it's removed.
10. When the photo space fills
Fliers, pictures, the ward's program artwork and the PDFs on Ward plans all share one space for each ward. When it's full, adding one says so:
- "This ward's photo space is full. Remove some photos first", for a picture or a flier page;
- "This ward's upload space is full. Remove a plan or some photos first", for a plan's PDF.
To free room:
- Remove an announcement you no longer need. Remove it deletes its flier or picture too.
- On an announcement that's staying, take its flier off with the × on the field, or take out pages you don't need.
- Remove a plan you no longer need from Ward plans.
Ended announcements free their space on their own, once they're removed three days after they end. A painting picked from the library takes no space.
