The program your ward opens

The link, the ward's home, the printed program and Announcements.

Where
The Sunday

Publishing a Sunday gives your ward one link, to the ward's home, which leads with the program on Sunday morning. The same Sunday prints as a folded program, and its announcements fill the ward's calendar. You set it up once in Settings and never type a name twice.

What people can see. Anyone with the link can open the program, the ward's home, Announcements (with the calendar), Sign-ups, Ward contacts and Ward plans, and any baptism or organization program you publish. They don't sign in. So treat everything that prints on the program as public: the theme, the announcements and their details, the contacts. Keep private details out of those fields.

1. Publish and share

To look it over first, tap Preview, the wide button under Publish and Conduct. The preview shows the phone program and the printed one exactly as the ward will get them, published or not. Before you publish lists each line that will read "To be announced" or "By invitation", except a prayer you kept by invitation. None of them stops you publishing. Press Publish there, or Keep editing to go back.

Or, on the Sunday, press Publish. The badge turns to Published and the Published at section shows the ward's link, with three buttons:

  • Copy the link.
  • Share the link, straight to a text or email.
  • A printer button, Folded program, which opens the program to print and fold in half.

Publishing sends nothing by itself. The ward sees the program when you share the link.

After that, just keep editing. The ward's page picks up saved changes within half a minute. Unpublish takes the program down again.

3. The ward's home

The ward's home is what the link opens. At the top are today's date and your ward's name. Under them is one card, which changes with the day:

  • On Sunday, from midnight until just after the meeting, today's theme and See the program. The program opens only when a member taps it.
  • On Saturday, once Sunday is published, Tomorrow, the meeting time and Sacrament meeting on one line, then the theme and See the program. The speakers are on the program, not the card.
  • For a Sunday with no meeting, once its notice is published, your reason and No sacrament meeting, on the Saturday before and all that Sunday. See the details opens the notice.
  • If you chose All week, the coming Sunday's card stays on top every other day too, once it's published, and all of that Sunday. This week sits under it, except while the meeting is on. A Sunday published further ahead waits for its own week.
  • Under the Saturday and Sunday cards, when This week isn't there, announcements the bishopric featured, on a card headed Featured. A tap opens one on Announcements. With nothing featured, there is no card.
  • Any other time, This week: announcements the bishopric featured come first, then this week's events, Sunday through the next Sunday, four at most. A quiet week says Coming up and shows the next two. Each one shows its weekday, date and month, and a tap opens it on Announcements. See all announcements is at the bottom.

When missionary meals has dinners open in the next seven days, This week also has a Help needed line, and shows three events instead of four (see missionary meals).

Below it are up to five rows, always in this order:

  • Announcements, with how many there are (see Announcements).
  • Sign-ups, with how many are open. It lists each one under Closing soon or Open, with Sign up. The row shows only when a sign-up is on the public page.
  • Talk with the bishopric, when you have turned on appointment requests. It opens your sign-up page, or a sheet to call, text or email the person who sets up times (see choose what's on the page).
  • Ward contacts: the bishopric and other leaders with call, text and email buttons, If you need something, and Stay in the loop, your ward links. Tap a link to open it, or tap its QR code to show it large so the person beside you can scan it.
  • Ward plans, with how many plans are posted and the first few by name (see Ward plans). The row is there only when a plan is on the page.

A row you turn off on the Ward page isn't shown, and the others keep their order. With every row off, home says the program will be there once it's ready.

At the foot are Keep this on your home screen (see below) and Share with someone. It opens the same share screen as the share button on the other screens (see below), with the ward's link.

4. The program and the share button

The program shows the date and time, the theme and artwork, and a Join the meeting button if you set a Virtual meeting link in Settings → Sacrament meeting → Meeting time and link. Then who presides, conducts and leads the music, then the program: hymns (linked to the hymn when 1stHour recognises it), prayers and speakers with their topics. More from and your ward's name, at the bottom, goes to the ward's home.

The way back. Every screen but the home has your ward's name in the upper left corner, such as "‹ Maple Grove". It goes back to the ward's home.

The share button is in the upper right corner of every screen but the home. It opens a full screen with a QR code, so a member can let the person beside them scan it. Tap the × in the upper right, or anywhere outside the code, to put it away. On Announcements it shares Announcements, showing the organization the member picked. Everywhere else it shares the ward's link.

Under the code, Copy link copies the address (it says Copied! for a few seconds). On a phone, a share button sits beside it, with the phone's own share symbol. It opens the phone's share menu, so the link can go by text message, AirDrop or another app. A computer without a share menu shows only Copy link.

Contacts, ward links and If you need something are all set in Ward page → Ward contacts. See getting your ward set up.

5. The program's artwork

The artwork is chosen on the Sunday, under Bulletin artwork: press Choose artwork, then pick a painting, upload a photo, or use a picture from another website. For a website's picture, copy the address of the picture itself (press and hold it, or right-click it, and copy the image address), paste it under Paste an image link, and press Use this image once the preview shows. The address has to start with https://. If it leads to a web page instead of a picture, 1stHour says so and won't use it. A picture you copied (a screenshot, say) can go in with Paste a picture, shown when your browser lets 1stHour read the clipboard. On a computer you can also press Choose artwork and then Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac).

Keep a photo for the ward. A photo you upload can be kept, so any Sunday can use it again without uploading it again. The ward keeps up to five.

  1. Upload the photo.
  2. Under it, type a few words in What it shows. They are read to anyone who can't see the picture.
  3. Tick Keep for the ward.

Kept photos show under Choose artwork beside the paintings, on every Sunday, and on the bulletin editor's Sundays too. Only the bishopric and the bulletin editor keep or remove one. Anyone else who chooses artwork can still pick a kept photo.

With five kept, the tick is greyed out until you remove one. Open Change and press the cross on a kept photo. Removing a photo only takes it off the list: a Sunday that shows it keeps it. Once no Sunday shows it, it is deleted from the ward's uploads.

6. What stays off the public page

These are never sent to the public page at all, so nobody with the link can find them:

  • Names in ward business. The program shows only the "Ward & Stake Business" heading.
  • Spoken-only announcements, drafts, and announcements outside their dates.
  • A baptism's announcement from the ward mission leader, until the bishopric shares it. A Primary baptism's shows under Primary as soon as it's added.
  • Blocks set to be said but not printed.
  • A speaker who hasn't accepted yet: an idea, someone you've asked, or someone who declined.

Signed-in leaders still see all of this in 1stHour, as their role allows. "Off the public page" means off the link, not deleted.

Heads up

Only accepted speakers are named. A speaker shows by name once you've marked them Accepted. Until then, a speaker slot reads "To be announced", and a youth speaker slot is left off completely. The phone program and the printed program work the same way. Your conducting script still shows everyone.

7. The printed program

The printer button under Published at, Folded program, opens the printed program: one letter sheet, printed on both sides and folded in half.

  1. Press Print / Save PDF.
  2. In your printer's settings, choose double-sided, flipping on the short edge. Turn headers and footers off and background graphics on. These settings look different on each device and browser.
  3. Fold it down the middle.

The front has the date, theme and artwork. Inside are the program and the announcements that fit: this week's events, then the ward's and stake's news. An organization's own announcement prints only in the week of its event (see what prints). The back has your contacts, standing ward info, your ward links as QR codes, and a code that opens the live program. What doesn't fit is left off, and fliers aren't printed. To leave the artwork off the paper, tick Leave it off the folded program on the Sunday.

If a Sunday has no meeting, there's no folded program to print.

8. Announcements

Announcements is the ward's calendar and its notices in one place. Members open it from the Announcements row or See all announcements on the ward's home. Every printed announcement is there from the first day it shows, with events up to a year ahead.

Members can:

  • read it as a List: This week, Standing notices, the rest of this month, and each month. When the bishopric has featured something, a card headed Featured comes first, with the next three. A tap on one goes to it on its own day, where it also shows, marked Featured. An event over several days, such as a giving machine open for two weeks, is one card with its first and last day in the date column. A repeating event is listed on each of its days;
  • switch to Month: a calendar with a dot for each organization on a day. An event over several days is marked on each of them. Tap a day to list its announcements under the calendar;
  • tap Showing to pick which groups to see. Tap each organization they want, or Standing notices, then tap Done. Everything shows them all again. The choice holds in both views;
  • with more than one group picked, read the List by group instead of by date. An announcement for both Young Women and Young Men is listed once, under Young Women & Young Men, when both are picked. The Featured card shows only what's featured from those groups;
  • add an event to their own calendar with Add to calendar, or share it with the button at the end of the same line;
  • tap a flier to open it full size. A baptism's announcement also has Open the baptism program, but only while that program is published (see announcing a baptism).

Choose the view it opens on in Ward page → Announcements: List or Month. Members can still switch.

9. Let members subscribe

A calendar feed lets members subscribe to the whole ward calendar. Their calendar app then keeps it up to date: new events appear, and edited ones change. It's off until the bishopric turns it on.

Note

Publish a calendar feed shows up only in wards where the feed has been turned on. If you don't see it, it isn't on for your ward yet.

  1. Open Ward page → Announcements.
  2. Turn on Publish a calendar feed.

The first time a member opens Announcements, Put these on your calendar sits at the top. They tap Subscribe, tick the groups they want (Relief Society and Young Women, say) or leave them all unticked for everything, and tap Next. Then they choose Apple Calendar, Google Calendar or Outlook, or Copy link to add the address to any other calendar app. Once they subscribe, or close the box with ✕, it doesn't come back on that phone: Subscribe sits beside the count of notices instead, with the groups they picked last time already ticked.

The feed carries the same events as the page, plus sacrament meeting on each Sunday you publish, at your ward's time zone. A member who picks groups gets only those groups' events; sacrament meeting comes with Ward. Each event's notes end with a link back: an announcement opens on Announcements, and sacrament meeting opens that Sunday's program. Turning it on sends nothing to anyone.

Google Calendar's phone apps can't subscribe by themselves. A member using Google subscribes once from a computer, and the ward's calendar then shows on their phone too. Google names it by its web address; to give it your ward's name, rename it in that calendar's settings in Google Calendar.

Heads up

Turning the feed off stops the updates. Events already on members' calendars stay there until they unsubscribe.

To stop a subscription, a member removes the ward's calendar in their own calendar app: in Apple Calendar, Google Calendar or Outlook, find the ward's calendar in the list of calendars and unsubscribe or remove it there. 1stHour can't do it for them. The stop link at the foot of 1stHour's morning schedule email turns off only that email, not the calendar.

Heads up

An event is in the feed while its announcement is showing. If an announcement stops showing before its event, for example with This Sunday only or Choose dates, the event leaves members' calendars then. For a repeating event, every date still to come leaves with it. Past events leave their calendars soon after they're over.

Only the bishopric can turn the feed on or off. The clerk sees the switch but can't change it.

10. A Sunday with no meeting

General Conference Sundays are already marked as having no meeting. To mark another Sunday, tap Change type at the top of a draft Sunday, choose Blocked: no meeting, and give a Reason, such as Stake Conference. For any other kind of Sunday, see change what kind of Sunday it is.

To tell the ward where to watch that week:

  1. Open Program and tap the Sunday's reason (for example General Conference) to open it.
  2. Under Notice for the ward, write the Details. A General Conference Sunday starts with a short line you can change or clear.
  3. To add a link, paste a web address that starts with https:// into Link. In Link text, give the words its button shows. Each field saves when you leave it.
  4. Press Publish, at the top of the page.

On that Sunday and the Saturday before, the ward's home shows your reason at the top, with See the details. It opens No sacrament meeting with your reason, your details and the link as a button. The week's announcements are on Announcements, from the ward's home.

The Sunday's card in Program reads Notice not published until you publish, then Notice published. Unpublish takes it down again.

Stake conference

Stake conference comes twice a year, and the stake says the day. To have Rhythms keep it, add it from Pick from common ones, or choose Stake conference under Takes a Sunday on a new rhythm. It waits in its month until you pick the day.

  1. Once the stake names the day, open the rhythm and tap Set the date.
  2. Pick the Sunday.
  3. Under Also plan the Sunday, press Plan the Sunday.

The bulletin announces it from four Sundays before.

Without a rhythm, open the Sunday, tap Change type and choose Stake Conference. There is no reason to type. Either way, the notice starts with a short line and three sessions: Leadership session and Adult session on the Saturday, and General session on the Sunday.

  1. Open the Sunday. Each session is under Notice for the ward.

Heads up

With a stake conference rhythm, a session is public as soon as its Starts is filled in, even before you publish this Sunday. Fill it in only once the stake has shared it.

  1. Fill in when it Starts and Ends, and its Place. Change its Day or its name in Session if your stake does it differently. Use Note to say who a session is for or what to bring.
  2. Tap Remove session to take one off the page, such as a session only leaders are invited to. Tap Add a session for one more.
  3. Press Publish, at the top of the page.

The ward's link lists each session with its day, time, place and note. Anything you left empty is not shown. Members can tap Add to calendar under a session to save it, and each session is on Announcements on its own day. With a stake conference rhythm, each session that has a start takes the place of the rhythm's announcement in the bulletin and on the ward calendar, before this Sunday is published. Any other Sunday with no meeting can list sessions the same way with Add a session.

See it as members do

Every leader can open the ward's page from inside 1stHour:

  • The bishopric and the clerk open Ward page and tap Open it as members see it.
  • An org editor taps More, then Ward page. On a wide screen, Ward page is in the sidebar under Members.
  • The bulletin editor and the ward mission leader tap the same Ward page door. It opens Page views, with the page's link at the top: tap Open it as members see it.
  • The musical director taps their initials at the top, then Ward page.

It opens the page's home, the same one members see. Opened this way, home has Back to 1stHour at the top, which takes you back to the app. Members never see it, and neither does a copy of the page kept on your home screen.

Keep it on the home screen

At the foot of the ward's home, and on Ward contacts, Keep this on your home screen puts the ward's page on a member's home screen, with your ward's name under the icon. It opens the ward's link, so it never needs adding again. The share screen (the share button at the top right of the other screens, or Share with someone on the home) shows the same steps under Keep it on your home screen, so you can help the person beside you. Tap iPhone or Android for their kind of phone. It starts on yours, or on iPhone on a computer, and it shows the steps even on a computer or in a page already on your home screen.

  • On Android, tap the link, then confirm on the phone's own install message. If no message comes up, it shows the steps instead: tap the menu (three dots) at the top right of the browser, tap Add to Home screen (some phones say Install or Create shortcut), then tap Add, Install or Create.
  • On an iPhone or iPad in Safari, tap the link to see the steps. Tap the menu button at the left of the address bar (on some iPhones it is More, three dots, beside it), then Share, then View More, then Add to Home Screen. Keep Open as Web App on and tap Add. On an older iPhone, Share is in the toolbar.
  • In Chrome on an iPhone, tap Share in the address bar, then Add to Home Screen, then Add.

On a computer, Chrome and Edge show the link too, and install the program as an app. It isn't shown where it can't work, such as in Firefox or in Safari on a Mac, or when the program was already opened from the home screen. Adding it sends nothing to anyone.

Sharing one announcement

This lives here because it happens on the public page. Each announcement on Announcements has a share button at the end of its Add to calendar line. It sends a link that opens Announcements scrolled to that announcement, so a member can pass one notice on to a friend. If the announcement has finished by the time someone opens it, the page says so. To write or change announcements, see the bulletin.

Choose what's on the page

Ward page is the settings for the ward's page. Open it from Ward page under Members, on Today or in the menu (on a phone, in More), or from Settings → What members see. At the top is the page's address. Open it as members see it opens the page's home right here, with Back to 1stHour at the top (see see it as members do). QR code shows a code to scan, Copy copies the link to paste into a text, and Share sends it straight to a text or email.

Under the link are the parts of the page, in the order members see them. Each has a switch, except the Sunday program:

  • Sunday program is always on the page. Under it, Weekend or All week chooses which days home leads with it (see the ward's home). Weekend is the default.
  • Announcements: turn it off and home loses its Announcements row and the This week card. On Saturday and Sunday the meeting card still shows. Tap the row to choose the view it opens on.
  • Sign-ups: turn it off and home loses its Sign-ups row and the Help needed line. If Sign-ups is off for your ward, tap Turn on to go to its settings.
  • Ward contacts: turn it off to take it off the ward's page. The printed program's back cover still lists them. Tap the row to edit who is listed.
  • Ward plans: turn it off to take the ward's plans off the page. Tap the row to see the plans.

Tap a switch to turn a part on or off, or tap Weekend or All week. It saves right away. Tapping the rest of a row opens that part's settings. The bishopric and the clerk can change these.

You can also copy or share the link from Today, just under the next meeting.

Appointment requests {#appointment-requests}

  1. Open Ward page → Appointment requests.
  2. Choose how members ask for an appointment:
    • Don't show it: no row on the page.
    • Link to your sign-up page: members pick a time themselves (see the sign-up page).
    • A button to ask for a time: members call or text someone you choose, or email them when Ward contacts has their email.
  3. For a button, choose who to Reach, from the people in Ward contacts you can call. It starts on the executive secretary.

It saves when you choose. If you link the sign-up page and it closes, members ask the person in Ward contacts instead until it opens again. If the page is closed and there is nobody to call, the row isn't on the page or on the Ward page until one of those changes.

Ward plans

Ward pageWard plans

Ward plans puts the plans your ward works from on its page: a ward mission plan, a temple and family history plan, an emergency plan. Each one is a PDF, or a picture when the plan is a single page. The bishopric and the clerk add and change them.

  1. Open Ward page → Ward plans and tap Add a plan.
  2. Under Plan name, type its name, such as "Emergency plan".
  3. Tap Choose a PDF or a picture and pick the plan. A PDF can be up to 10 MB.
  4. Under Who answers questions, pick someone from Ward contacts, or leave No one yet.
  5. Tap Add to the ward.

A PDF goes up first, then each page is turned into a picture, which takes a moment for a long plan. A plan keeps its first 20 pages; a longer PDF says how many were kept. A picture is a plan of one page. A Word file can't be a plan: save it as a PDF first. Leave without adding goes back without adding anything.

Only Ward contacts with a phone number are offered under Who answers questions, shown as their name and role.

To ask someone who isn't listed yet, tap Add someone to Ward contacts under the list. Pick them from the ward list or type their name, then add their calling and phone number. Turn off Takes a text for a landline. Tap Add them: they're added to Ward contacts too, so they also show on the ward page and the bulletin's back cover, and they're picked for this plan.

To change a plan, tap it in the list. The name saves when you leave the field, and the person who answers questions saves when you pick them. Replace takes a new PDF or picture, and its pages take the old ones' place.

Heads up

Remove this plan asks first. Remove it takes the plan, its pages and its PDF off the ward's page for good.

What members see. Anyone with the ward's link sees a Ward plans row on the ward's home, naming the plans. Each plan opens on its own page, read page by page, with Questions naming who to call or text when you picked someone. Share or save the PDF hands members the PDF to save or send on; for a plan that is a picture, Share or save the picture hands them the picture. Adding or changing a plan sends nothing to anyone.

How often each is opened. Each plan in Ward page → Ward plans says how many times members opened it in the last 30 days, such as "Opened 12 times in the last 30 days". A plan opened again in the same visit counts once, and only the count is kept, never who opened it. The same counts, for every plan at once, are at the bottom of Page views.

How often the page is opened

Ward pagePage views

Page views shows how many members open your ward's page, and what they open. The bishopric and the clerk find it on the Ward page, under Who opens it. The bulletin editor and the ward mission leader tap Ward page: under More on a phone, in the sidebar on a wide screen. Their Page views starts with the page's link, to open, copy, share or show as a code.

Two figures sit at the top:

Visitors this week
How many devices have opened the page since Sunday, and how that compares with the same days last week. On a Tuesday, it sets Sunday to Tuesday against last Sunday to Tuesday.
Regulars this week
How many of this week's visitors also came last week, and what share of the visitors they are.

Each week shows the last twelve weeks, Sunday to Saturday, this week last. Tap Visitors or What they opened above it to switch:

Visitors
Each device counts once a week, on the first page it opens that week. Each bar splits them into those who also came last week, those back after a while, and new ones.
What they opened
Every page opened, by page: the program, the ward's home, Announcements, Sign-ups, Ward contacts, Ward plans and the printed program. Each counts once a visit, the first time it opens. Ward plans counts once however many plans are read. The bishopric and the clerk see each plan's own count in the Ward plans card at the bottom.

Each bar's total sits above it. Tap a week, or move along them with the arrow keys, to see its numbers under the chart. On a phone, swipe the chart sideways to see earlier weeks. Weeks from before 1stHour counted visitors are striped. A program left open counts once, however long it stays open. Link previews in a text or a chat, search engines and other bots aren't counted.

Who came this week splits this week's visitors three ways, with how many of each:

New
The first time this browser has opened the page.
Back after a while
It came before, then skipped at least a week.
Also came last week
It opened the page last week too. These are your weekly regulars.

A visitor is counted per browser, so a member on a new device, or who clears their browser, shows up as new.

What they open lists the pages members opened in the last 4 weeks, most opened first, with how many times each. Print is the printable program.

Ward plans, at the bottom, lists every plan on your ward's page with how many times members opened it in the last 30 days, most opened first. A plan nobody opened shows 0. The card is there while Ward plans is switched on for the ward's page, even before anyone has opened the page, and only the bishopric and the clerk see it. If the counts can't be read, the card is left out.

Note

Only counts are kept. To count a device once a week, the ward's page stores that week's date on the device itself, the same date on every device, which also tells whether it came the week before or is back after a while. 1stHour doesn't record who opened the page or from where, so Page views can't tell you who read the program. Once a week it counts what kind of device opened it (a phone, tablet or computer, its system, and whether it was saved to the home screen), never which one.

Org editors and the musical director can't open Page views (who can do what).
