Walk alongside someone

A path of steps for one person, each an assignment for whoever does it.

Where
People
Who
The bishopric

A path is a short list of steps your ward takes alongside one person: who invites, who schedules, what happens on the day. Your ward keeps as many paths as it needs, such as a new member after baptism or a young man moving up. The welcome for a household that moved in is one of them (see welcome a household).

Each step is an assignment. Whoever owns it sees it on Assignments (the Tasks tab on a phone) and gets the usual reminders. Only the bishopric sees, starts and works paths. Nothing here emails or messages anyone, and nothing about a path is noted on the person.

1. Your ward's paths

SettingsYour wardPaths

The screen lists Welcome first, then your ward's own paths. Each row says how it starts, whether it asks first, what date it works toward, how many steps it has and how many are open.

  • Tap Welcome to edit the welcome's checklist (see your ward's checklist). It can't be removed.
  • Tap any other path to edit it.
  • To change their order, tap Change the order, move each path with its arrows or drag it, then tap Done. Welcome always stays first.

This order is the order paths are offered when you start one, and the order of the groups on People.

2. Add a path

SettingsYour wardPathsAdd a path

  1. Tap + Add a path.
  2. Under Suggested, tap one of the four suggested paths: New member, after baptism, Returning to activity, New young man or New young woman. Or tap + A blank path to write your own.

The path opens for you to edit. A suggested path is a starting point: once added, it's your ward's to change. One you've already added shows Added. A ward can keep up to 20 paths.

3. Edit a path

SettingsYour wardPaths

Tap a path to open it. Every change saves as you make it. A path already open with someone keeps its own steps, so editing here changes only paths started from now on.

Path name
What it's called everywhere, such as "Melchizedek Priesthood".
Ask first
On, one step starts on its own and the rest wait until that step is done and they've said yes. The step that asks sits on its own at the top, under Ask first. Off, every step starts at once.
Works toward a date
On, the path asks for a date when it starts, and steps can be due before or after it. Under What to call the date, name it, such as "Ordination" or "Temple trip". That name is how the date reads on the path.

Under the switches are the steps, in order. Drag a step or use its arrows to move it. With Ask first on, drag a step to the top to make it the one that asks. Tap + Add a step to add one.

Start again from the suggested list shows on a path that came from a suggestion. It puts the suggested steps back in place of yours, and keeps your path's name.

Heads up

Remove this path asks first. Nobody new can start it. Paths already open with someone keep running to their end, with their own steps.

4. A step: who and when

Tap a step to open Edit this step.

  1. Under What needs doing, type the step, such as "Schedule the bishopric interview".
  2. Under Who does it, choose Bishopric, Organization or Pick each time, then choose which.
  3. Under Due, choose how long: On the day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months or None.
  4. On a path that works toward a date, choose what it counts from: After the start, or before or after the date ("Before the ordination", "After the ordination").
  5. Tap Keep the changes.
Bishopric
Bishop, First counselor, Second counselor, Executive secretary, or Bishopric. A step for Bishopric is handed to the bishopric as a whole, as any assignment for the bishopric is.
Organization
Any of the ward's organizations. The step is handed to it the way any organization assignment is: its leaders see the person's name and the step, nothing else about them.
By the person
Two rows at the end of the organizations. Elders quorum or Relief Society, by the person sends the step to the elders quorum for a brother and to Relief Society for a sister. Young Men or Young Women, by the person does the same for a young man or a young woman. 1stHour reads this from Brother or Sister on their card, or from the Bro. or Sis. in their name. With neither, the step waits for the bishopric to pick who.
Pick each time
Nobody until someone picks who, as the path starts or on the path.

"The start" is the day they said yes on a path that asks first, else the day the path started. The step that asks always counts from the day the path starts. A step due before or after the date has no due date until the date is set.

Remove this step asks first. Paths already open keep their steps.

5. Start a path

From the person's card in People, or from Add someone:

  1. On their card, under Paths, tap + Start a path with him (or her, or them). Or on People, tap the arrow beside Add someone, then Start a path, and pick who it's for.
  2. Tap Path and choose one. Your ward's paths are listed in the order set in Settings, under Your ward. A path they're already on isn't offered. Picking one closes the list.
  3. If the step that asks is Pick each time, choose who asks under Who asks him, or leave Decide later, on the path to pick there.
  4. If the path works toward a date, enter it. You can leave it not set and set it later on the path.
  5. Tap Start the path.

The path opens. On a path that asks first, only the first step starts now; the others wait on how it goes. Otherwise every step starts now, each an assignment for whoever does it. Nothing here messages the person.

Picking Welcome at step 2 and tapping Continue opens the welcome's own sheet, with them in it, so you can add the rest of the household (see where welcomes start).

Someone can be on several different paths at once, but not on the same one twice.

6. Follow a path

Open a path from the person's card (each open path is a row under Paths) or from the Paths chip on People. At the top it says when it started, when they said yes, and how many steps are done.

On a path that works toward a date, its chip shows the date, such as "Ordination · Nov 22". Tap Change (or Set it when it isn't set) to change it, then tap Keep the date. The open steps counted from the date move with it. Done steps stay as they are. Clear the date to make it not set again.

On a path that asks first, the screen first shows Waiting on the first step, with the other steps waiting. Once the steps start, it lists Done and Still to do. Each row says who has it and when it's due, set in amber when it's late. Tap a step's words to open its assignment and give it to someone, change its date or add a note. Tick it to mark it done.

To add a step for this person alone, tap + Add a step for and their name.

7. How did it go?

When the step that asks is done, tick it, on the path or on Assignments. How did it go? asks, in words for him, her or them as People knows them:

He'd like to
The other steps start, each due counted from today.
Couldn't reach him yet
The step stays open. Try again.
Reached, but hold the rest for now
The step is done. The others wait until someone taps Start the other steps on the path.
He said not now
The path ends and is deleted. Nothing is noted on him.

Not now closes the sheet without an answer.

8. Finish or close a path

Heads up

Ending a path deletes it, with every assignment it made, done and open. Nothing about it is kept on the person or anywhere else, and it can't be undone.

  • Ticking the last step on the path asks Finish the path? Tap Finish the path to end it.
  • To stop sooner, tap Close the path early, then Close the path.

If every step is done and nobody finishes it (the last one ticked on Assignments, or Keep it on the question), the path says it will be deleted 5 days after the last step was done. Until then you can still finish it yourself.

9. Every open path

On People, the Paths chip lists every open path, grouped by path: Welcome first, then your ward's paths in their order. Each card says who, how far along, the date when there is one, and the next step.

Tap a group's heading to fold it. A folded heading still says how many are on it, who when it's one person, and how many steps are overdue. Each phone or computer remembers which groups you folded. Search the ward and Youth and adults narrow the paths too.

While any path is open, Today shows a Paths card with how many are open, how many steps are overdue and how many dates aren't set. On a phone you can pin Paths to the bottom bar (see choose your bottom bar).

10. Who sees a path

Only the bishopric sees paths, starts them and opens them. An organization handed a step sees it on its assignments: the person's name and the step, nothing else. The ward clerk sees the welcomes, but no other path. See who can see what.
