Welcome a household
The first contact, then the steps your ward chose.
- Where
- People

- Bishopric and ward clerk
When a household moves in, a welcome keeps track of how the ward reaches them. It starts with one step, the first contact. The rest of your ward's checklist starts only once they've said they'd like a welcome, because a family whose records arrive may ask not to be contacted.
The welcome is one of your ward's paths, the one for a household (see walk alongside someone for the others).
Each step is an assignment. Whoever owns it sees it on Assignments (the Tasks tab on a phone) and gets the usual reminders. A step handed to an organization reaches its leaders the way any organization assignment does: they see the person's name and the step, nothing else about them. The bishopric and the ward clerk can open welcomes. Nothing here emails or messages anyone.
1. Where welcomes start
A welcome starts for each household on the Moved In report when you confirm it (see move members in or out), unless your ward turned that off in the checklist.
For someone new to the ward the report didn't bring, or someone returning to activity:
- On People, tap the arrow beside Add someone, then Start a path. The ward clerk sees Start a welcome here instead, which skips to step 4.
- Pick who it's for.
- Tap Path, choose Welcome, then tap Continue.
- Add everyone else in the household: they share one welcome.
- If your checklist leaves the first contact to whoever you pick, choose under Who reaches out first, or leave Decide later, on the welcome.
- Tap Start the welcome.
A bishopric member can also start one from the person's card: tap + Start a path with him (or her, or them) and choose Welcome. Someone already in a welcome can't be in a second one.
2. Welcomes under way
On People, the Paths chip lists every path under way, with the welcomes first, under Welcome: who, how far along, the move date, and the next step. A first contact gone past its date shows in amber. Tap the Welcome heading to fold the group; it still says how many steps are overdue. See every open path.
While a welcome is under way, the person's row reads New, with a line such as "Settling in · 2 of 7 welcome steps · Next: Bishop says hello". Their card has a row under Paths, such as "Welcome · The Weirs", that opens the welcome.
3. The first contact
Before the first contact, the welcome shows only that step, and says the others wait until they've been reached. When your checklist leaves it to whoever you pick, you can choose them as the welcome starts: on the moves confirm, under Who reaches out to each household, or when you start one by hand. Pick someone from the bishopric, or hand it to an organization (the ward missionaries, say), which then sees it as one of its assignments. Otherwise open its assignment on Assignments to pick who and set a date.
When it's done, tick it, on the welcome or on Assignments. How did it go? asks:
- They'd like a welcome
- The other steps start, each due counted from today.
- Couldn't reach them yet
- The first contact stays open. Try again.
- Reached, but hold the rest for now
- The first contact is done. The others wait until someone taps Start the other steps on the welcome.
- They asked not to be contacted
- The welcome ends and is deleted, with every assignment it made. They stay in People, and nothing is noted on them.
Not now closes it without an answer. The words say she, he or they, as People knows them.
4. The steps
Once the steps start, the welcome lists Done and Still to do. Each row says who has it and when it's due, and Handed to an organization when it is one's. A step with nobody on it yet reads "Nobody yet" in amber.
Tap a step to open its assignment right on the welcome: give it to someone, set a date, add a note. Tick it to mark it done.
To add something for this household alone, tap + Add a step for and the household's name. Type what needs doing. Under Who does it, choose someone from the bishopric or an organization, then choose when it's due. Before the first contact, the step waits with the others and keeps who and when until it starts.
If you delete someone from the ward list (People), they leave their welcome too. A welcome for them alone is deleted with its assignments.
5. Finish a welcome
Heads up
Finishing a welcome deletes it, with every assignment it made, done and open. Nothing of it is kept on the household or anywhere else, and it can't be undone.
When every step is done, tap Finish the welcome. Ticking the last step on the welcome asks Finish the welcome? too. To stop sooner, tap Finish the welcome early.
If every step is done and nobody finishes it, the welcome says it will be deleted 5 days after the last step was done.
6. Your ward's checklist
SettingsYour wardPathsWelcome
Open Paths, then tap Welcome at the top. The ward clerk, who doesn't set up paths, has Settings → Your ward → Welcome checklist instead, for the same checklist. The checklist is what every new welcome starts from. A welcome already under way keeps its own steps.
- Start a welcome from the Moved In report
- On, each household the report brings starts a welcome. Off, the report only adds the names.
- First contact
- The one step that starts on its own. Move another step up to make it the first contact.
- Once they've said yes
- The rest, in order. Drag a step, or use its arrows, to move it.
Tap a step to edit it. Under Who does it, choose Bishopric, Organization or Pick each time, then which. The bishopric's choices are Bishop, First counselor, Second counselor, Executive secretary and Bishopric (handed to the bishopric as a whole). The organizations end with Elders quorum or Relief Society, by the person and Young Men or Young Women, by the person, which go by each person's Brother or Sister mark or the Bro. or Sis. in their name (see who and when). For whom is everyone, adults, brothers, sisters or youth, from what People knows of each person. A step for brothers, sisters or youth is made once for each of them in the household.
Due counts from the day they said yes. Put it on ward business too is for a step read from the pulpit, like an introduction: when the step starts, the household goes on Ward business as one New member item, with the step marked On ward business. Put the item on a Sunday from Ward business as any other. A ward that has removed the New member type gets the step without the item.
+ Add a step adds one. Start again from the suggested list puts back the seven suggested steps.
7. Fix a household's welcome
A welcome is for the people it started with. Today you can't add someone to a welcome under way, or take someone off it.
- Two households were put together
- On the Moved In report, people who arrive with the same last name on the same day become one household. Before you confirm, tap Own household on a row to give that person a welcome of their own (see review each row).
- One family with two last names became two welcomes
- Nothing joins two welcomes. To have one, finish one of them (tap Finish the welcome early), then start a new welcome from People for everyone, the way where welcomes start says. Someone still in a welcome can't be added to another, so finish it first.
- Someone in a welcome was added by mistake
- Deleting them from People takes them off every welcome. The rest of the household keeps theirs. Delete only a duplicate or a mistake (see hold, move out or delete).
Heads up
Finishing a welcome early deletes it and every assignment it made, done and open. It can't be undone.
