Ward business

From “we decided” to the pulpit.

Where
Business
Who
Bishopric and ward clerk

Ward business is the part of sacrament meeting that goes wrong on the stand: a name left off, a calling read wrong, a vote of thanks forgotten. In 1stHour it goes like this:

  1. Write it down once, when it's decided.
  2. Put it on a Sunday. Until then it waits in a queue.
  3. Check the script before the meeting.
  4. Read it from the conducting script on the day, with the wording already written.

Only the conductor reads the names. The program people see and print shows just a heading.

1. Capture it when it's decided

  1. Open Business from Today or the side menu.
  2. Tap Capture something new, at the bottom of the screen on a phone or beside the title on a computer.
  3. Pick the kind of business:
    • Release and Sustaining: the member and the calling
    • Baby blessing: the child and the parents
    • Confirmation: the member
    • Priesthood advancement: the member and the office
    • New member: the member, or everyone in the family
    • Baptism announcement: the member and the date
    • By way of announcement: the member and the calling, for a calling read with no sustaining vote, such as a class or quorum presidency
  4. Enter who it's for (the member, or the child for a baby blessing) and the other fields, all on the same screen.
  5. Under Which Sunday, leave Queue to decide later, or pick one of the next Sundays. Only Sundays with a sacrament meeting are offered.
  6. Tap Add to the queue, or Add to and the date. You're back on ward business, with the item under Waiting or on its Sunday.

Nothing is saved until it has a name, and the name can't be cleared later. (A kind of your own with no member field needs no name.) If you started from a Sunday's ward business, there's no Sunday to pick: the item goes straight onto that Sunday. A Sunday that can't take it (already held, or with no sacrament meeting) leaves it under Waiting, and the app says so.

Names come from your ward list, or you can just type one. Parents and new members take several names, read as "A, B and C". The Note field is for you ("family asked for Sep 20"), and it's never read aloud. To change an item later, open it: each field saves as you go.

Captured as the wrong kind? Open the item and tap Change type, at the top. Pick any kind on the list, your ward's own included, and tap Make it and the kind. It keeps its Sunday, its link and its note. Details carry over where the new kind asks for the same thing, such as the member and the calling. The sheet says what carries over and what is Still to fill in. A sustaining made from a calling can become By way of announcement this way, or from the calling itself.

Heads up

Nothing is required, so a half-filled item is read that way, with a placeholder such as {Member} where the name should be. Before the meeting, open the script and check that every name and calling is filled in.

2. Put it on a Sunday

Everything you capture starts under Waiting, with no Sunday yet. Nothing is spoken until it's on one. To schedule an item, either:

  • tap Add to and the date beside it, for the coming Sunday,
  • open it and pick one of the next few Sundays under Which Sunday, or
  • drag it by its grip (the dotted handle at the left of the row) onto a Sunday listed above.

Keep waiting puts it back in the queue. So does dragging it from a Sunday onto Waiting.

Only Sundays that already have business are listed, among the next eight meetings. To start a Sunday that has none yet, use Which Sunday.

Once a Sunday has passed, its items drop off Ward business: they count as done. They aren't deleted, and nothing is sent, but there is no list of past business to go back to.

If you started from a Sunday (the Ward business block on the program), what you capture lands on that Sunday by itself.

Waiting items also show on the bishopric meeting agenda under Business queued. You can put them on a Sunday there with one tap, while you're all in the room.

3. Get the order right

Under On each date, items are listed in the order they'll be read. Releases come first, then sustainings, then callings by way of announcement, then everything else. That order is fixed. Within each group, drag or use the arrows to reorder.

To move an item to a different Sunday, drag it by its grip onto that Sunday's list. The Sunday you're over is outlined. The item lands where you let go, inside its own group: a sustaining dropped among the releases goes first among the sustainings. If the list you need is off the screen, hold the item near the top or bottom edge and the page scrolls.

When a calling changes hands, link the release to the sustaining that replaces it: open the item, then Link to another item under Linked items. Linked items always move to the same Sunday together, so one is never read without the other. Each is still read with its own group. Unlink separates them.

4. Ordinances in the meeting

A baby blessing or confirmation asks one more question: In the meeting.

Yes, performed in this meeting
The script adds a note to pause while it happens.
No, just acknowledge it
For an ordinance done at home or in another ward, read as one line.

5. What gets read, and what gets printed

At the pulpit

Press Conduct on the Sunday. Business sits under one heading, and items of the same kind are read together: the introduction once, then each name and calling, then the vote. The wording switches between one person and several by itself.

The callings are read in three parts, each with its own introduction: the releases, then the sustainings, then the callings by way of announcement. By way of announcement has no vote. With the wording 1stHour starts with, one reads:

By way of announcement, the following individual has been called in her class or quorum:

  • Sis. Ada Lowe, as Laurel class president

Two lines of the Ward business block lead into the business:

Stake business
A line that hands the time to the stake, read only on a Sunday you've switched stake business on (see below).
The sentence before the business
Read once before the releases and sustainings, and only on a Sunday that has some.

To change either one, open the Ward business block on the Sunday's program and type it under Stake business or Ward business. Leave a line blank and it's never read. To change them for every new Sunday, open the block in Settings → Sacrament meeting → Meeting templates instead.

When the stake is coming. On the Sunday's program, under the Ward business block, turn on Stake business this Sunday. It starts off on every new Sunday, because the stake tells you ahead of time when they have business; a ward conference starts with it on. With it on, the conducting script reads the stake line and the program's heading reads "Ward & Stake Business". With it off, the stake line is left out and the heading reads "Ward Business". Sundays planned before the switch existed keep their stake line until you turn it off.

Ward business first. The stake line is read before the ward's releases and sustainings. To read the ward's business first and hand the time to the stake after it, open Settings → Sacrament meeting → Conducting script and, under Ward and stake business, choose Ward first. It applies to every Sunday whose stake business is on, and the Ward business block on a Sunday's program then shows its two lines in that order.

For example, with the wording 1stHour starts with, two sustainings on the same Sunday read:

We have called the following individuals, and propose that they be sustained. As the names are read, please stand.

  • Bro. Tomas Reyes, as Elders Quorum second counselor
  • Sis. Hana Moe, as Primary pianist

Those in favor may manifest it by the uplifted hand. Those opposed, if any, may manifest it.

Your ward can change these words: see Make it say what your ward says.

On the program

Names are spoken, never printed. The phone program and the printed program show only the heading, "Ward & Stake Business" or "Ward Business", not the names or callings under it. Only the bishopric and the ward clerk can see business items.

6. Make it say what your ward says

SettingsSacrament meetingBusiness types & wording

Everything here can be changed:

  • Change the wording. Open a type and edit Before the names, For each item and After the names. In For each item, tap + Add a blank to add a field, such as Member, and each item's value is read in its place. Read aloud, above the three boxes, reads the whole wording with sample names as you type. Tap For one or For two to hear it both ways: the names, and the words that change with the count, show in teal.
  • Words that change with how many. + Add a blank also offers pairs such as individual / individuals. The first word is read for one name and the second for more. In For each item, that counts the names in that one item. For a pair of your own, tap Words of your own… in the same list, type both words, and tap Add these words. It follows the same count as the others: how many names are read together. To change or remove a pair, tap it in the box: Change words or Remove blank.
  • Pronouns for one person. With a single name, the pairs he or she / they, him or her / them and his or her / their become she or he when 1stHour knows which: from Brother or Sister on their card in People, or a title typed with the name, such as Sis. or Bro. Otherwise the pair stays as written. Two or more names always use they.
  • Something nothing fills is flagged under the boxes, often with a one-tap fix.
  • Ward conference. Add stake wording gives a type different words for ward conference.
  • Add a kind of your own. Use + Build a type of your own, or Build your own type at the bottom of the capture list. Give it a Name (a temple recommend renewal, say), a Badge (it also sets when it's read: Release with the releases, Sustaining with the sustainings, any other after them), whether it's Performed in the meeting or Just announced, and its Fields, then Create the type. Then open it and write its wording. You can add, rename, reorder and remove its fields later.
  • Turn off a kind your ward never uses, with its On / Off switch, so it stops showing on the capture list.
  • Delete a kind of your own with Delete this type. The standard kinds can only be turned off.

Heads up

Delete this type asks first. Keep it leaves the type as it is. Delete it deletes it, and it can't be brought back. Items already captured with it stay on their Sundays, but they're read as bare names and details, with none of its wording.

A wording change applies to every item of that type, including ones already captured and already on a Sunday. The script reads the current wording each time it opens.

How speakers and the music between them are introduced is set separately, under Settings → Sacrament meeting → Conducting script.

Coming from Callings

If you track callings in 1stHour, you don't capture sustainings by hand. Recording that someone accepted a calling adds the sustaining to the queue, together with the release it causes.

  • Made for you: the sustaining and the release, linked, with the names, and the organization and position as written on the calling ("Relief Society Instructor").
  • Still yours to do: choose the Sunday (right there in Callings, or here), and check that the position reads well aloud. If the person being released hasn't been told yet, the pair can't go on a Sunday, and 1stHour says why.

A calling that is announced rather than sustained, such as a class presidency, can be read By way of announcement instead: under Next step on the calling, or on its sustaining here, use Change type. It stays linked to its release, and Callings still marks it sustained once its Sunday has come.

Set apart is the next step, back in Callings. See Callings.
